Furniture Leather Tools Workshop Milan Design Show

The event may be coming to close this weekend, but there's still time to preview great creations. Check out our selection below.

FUTURE ARCHAEOLOGY

Objects of Common Interest x Etage Projects Gallery

New York studio Objects of Common Interest and Copenhagen gallery Etage Projects joined forces to bring Future Archaeology, an object-based installation, to Milan's Alcova. The set-up displays a 'future domestic landscape' with geometric, residential pieces composed of steel, holographic paint and biodegradable acrylic.

MEDALLION OF LIGHT

Tokujin Yoshioka x Dior

For Milan Design Week Dior tapped a group of designers to produce their own take on the Medallion Chair, an icon in the brand universe. The original chair made in style of King Louis XIV, Tokujin Yoshioka set out to 'symbolize the unity of history and future' with his iteration. Medallion of Light comprises 364 layered plates of clear acrylic resin that interact with the unique light in settings.

ADELA REX

Andreu World

Philippe Starck's first collaboration with Andreu World, the sculptural Adela Rex arm and lounge chairs are crafted utilizing a special mould. Rendered in oak and walnut plywood, the pieces have a low carbon footprint and each component can be recycled after use. To personalize the seats, clients can select from a wide range of fabric and leather upholstery.

MAXIMUS

Blå Station

Taking cues from the paintings of Keith Haring, Blå Station's Maximus appears like 'it's sketched as a comic-strip furniture piece' despite being fully made from heavy-duty ash wood. Designer Johan Ansander used 3D-modelling CAD-software for CNC wood routers to forge the chair – he aimed to explore 'how locally sourced material can be used in a contemporary way'.

BELT

DDAA

You won't find any glue, adhesives or nails on DDAA's furniture series Belt. Instead, the studio challenged traditional assembly by experimenting with lashing belts used for truck beds, a method that draws parallels with the popular repair technique kintsugi. On show at Alcova, the collection, including a table, low table, sofa and shelf, 'proposes a system that can be assembled without using tools'.

EREI

DePadova

Multiple arrangements arise from Elisa Ossini's Erei seating family for DePadova. Complementary poufs and side tables clad with wood and leather can be added to the sofa foundation for greater functionality in the home space. The design has slender steel feet and stitching that reinterprets the capitonné motif.

RICHARD

ecoBirdy

Part of the RoGUILTLESSPLASTIC exhibition curated by the Rossana Orlandi, the Richard armchair by ecoBirdy raises awareness about plastic waste, originating from household discard. Design duo Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel envisaged a set suited for indoor or outdoor and private or public use – Richard is accompanied by Judy, a side table.

STUMP

Hem

Faye Toogood conceived two coffee tables and side tables for Stump, a new collection from Hem. Born from an investigation into methods of creating 'beautiful rounded shapes without using solid timber', the tables look to be solid forms although they're hollow. 'The tables are made with a basic MDF that has been given a simple satin matte finish which really enhances the fibres in the material,' says Toogood.

TURTLE CARRY XS

Qeeboo

A small version of the original Turtle Carry, Turtle Carry XS is a playful pocket emptier in the shape of its namesake animal. Cast from white, opaque resin, the Marcantonio and Qeeboo products are meant to fit in any corner of the house. A dish for keys, coins and the like sits upon the turtle's shell.

CARTESIO

UniFor

Designed especially for Maastricht's Bonnefanten Museum in 1994, Aldo Rossi's Cartesio bookshelf for UniFor mirrors the architect's typical building façades with square windows. Cartesio's cubic boxes of painted sheet metal form a modular solution, available in an open version or enclosed by a windowed façade in wood.
